Shirley, Dee, Justin, Taylor and Miss Amy
Frostburg Dance Academy began with Shirley Sigler, my dance teacher, 1970. She started the studio on Main Street in the Knights of Columbus building. From there she moved to the corner of Main and Grant Street and from there she went to her home on Barnard Street in Frostburg. Tracy Kelly, who many of you know as Mrs. Kirk, was one of her instructors. Susan Stewart was also an instructor for Shirley. Susan went on to do many things and one of those things was to open a dance studio on Mechanic Street called Family Dance Studio. We are not sure where Susan is now. Shirley had students from Frostburg State University dance program teach her ballet classes. Her dughter, Dee, taught the baton and preschool programs. Dee went on to have studios in Meyersdale, Tarentum and even Myrtle Beach. She is no longer in the dance field. Shirly has a studi o in Tarentum , Pennsylvania and sometimes Dee helps her out. I keep in touch with them regularly.
Shirley is a member of Dance Masters Chapter 17 and Dance Educators Professional Dance Teachers Association. She served on the Board of Dirctors for PDTA and opened a school in Keyser, WV. Shirley now lives in Pittsburgh and continues to teach dance for her daughter.
Many of Shirley's students have gone on and succeeded in life. Chris Collins went on and started his own studio in Virginia and also runs a competition. He is very successful.
I am very thankful to Shirley for seeing something in me that allowed me to be very active in her studio since I was 16 years old. She taught me how to be firm and to respect the art of dance. She ultimately entrusted me to buy a business that she started from the ground up. She continues to support me and enjoys watching the studio grow. It will always be a part of her.
